Sarah’s Notes from the 2012 Infusion Nurses Society Annual Convention

I had the great pleasure of attending the 2012 Infusion Nurses Society Annual Convention April 29 – May 3 in Las Vegas, Nevada. I look forward to going to the INS conference every other year. It gives me a chance to network with other infusion nurses and see the latest in infusion-related products and new research that is improving infusion practice.

I will admit that Las Vegas was a bit overwhelming, and I had the hardest time finding my way around the hotel/casino. (I was told they purposely confuse you this way so you gamble more). Once I got my bearings it was smooth sailing. (By the way, I don’t gamble). The conference Keynote Speaker was Jeff Henderson. What an honor to hear him speak of his amazing redemption story from spending nearly a decade behind bars to an award winning motivational speaker, NY Times best-selling author, and Food Network TV personality. It was a fantastic start to a great week!

The expo is another favorite part of the convention where I can try products and ask questions to vendors. They have poster presentations from infusion nurses around the world. This year several of the presentations were practice changing; one in particular focused on PIV dwell times. I am excited to see better evidence-based practice research to improve patient care. I love smart nurses who aren’t content with the status quo. It is a real honor to visit with them, and it motivates me to think forward. I already have a few ideas bouncing in my head for a possible study to launch for next year.

I have grown accustom to traveling to the conference by myself and enjoy talking with other nurses every chance I have. We are exposed to a number of experiences at Alternacare Infusion Pharmacy, but the national conference exposes me to even more cutting edge practices. I am so grateful that AIP sees the advantage in providing us opportunities to meet up with other professionals who are passionate about infusion nursing. I always return with new tools that improve my practice, resulting in better outcomes for our patients. While away from my daily nursing routine, I have the opportunity to think about infusion nursing in a different light.

(What Sarah did NOT mention in her notes above is that she won an award for an essay she wrote about excellence in nursing!!!!)

Immunotherapy in the Home and/or Infusion Suite

Our mission is to provide our patients with exceptional care from our dedicated, experienced nurses and pharmacists in order to improve quality of life.

Alternacare provides safe and effective therapy to hundreds of patients with complex and chronic conditions. These patients may encounter many challenges, including transportation, unavoidable wait time in clinics or offices, scheduling conflicts and inconvenient appointment times. Our nurses can provide immunotherapy at a convenient time for the patient in the home or in our infusion suite. This convenience also often lowers the risk of infection commonly spread in facilities in addition to lowering cost by using the patient’s prescription drug plan. Under a prescription drug benefit many patients pay a co-pay of $20 per month. Moreover, the cost of immunotherapy in the hospital is approximately twice the cost of home therapy. Using Alternacare’s services in the home or in our infusion suite for therapy and reducing the total costs that are billed to your medical plan, the patient will save money.

By utilizing Alternacare Infusion Pharmacy’s service for patients requiring immunotherapy, your patients’ will:

1. Receive quality care in the comfort and convenience of home and/or infusion suite

2. Obtain potential medical cost-savings.

Did you know that Alternacare has served more than 10.000 patients in the states of Kansas and Missouri?
